To Fear or Not to Fear

1 Samuel 21 | January 23, 2022

Unholy Fear Leads to Deception

                Provision (1 Samuel 21:1-6)

“David said to Ahimelech the priest, ‘The king has charged me with a matter and said to me, Let no one know anything of the matter about which I send you, and with which I have charged you. I have made an appointment with the young men for such and such a place. Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever is here.” (v2-3)

                Protection (1 Samuel 21:7-15)

“David said to Ahimelech, “Then have you not here a spear or a sword on hand? For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.” (v8)

Holy Fear Leads to Dependence

                Provision (Psalm 34:1-10)

“I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. . .Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints,
for those who fear him have no lack! The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.”

(v4,8-10)

                Protection (Psalm 34:11-22)

“I will teach you the fear of the Lord. . .Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.” (v11, 19)

Fear never . . . not ever . . . negates the necessity
of our obedience to God and His commands
