Scripture: Isaiah 42
The Servant is the chosen, loved and Spirit-anointed Messiah
“Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I
have put my Spirit upon him. . .” (v1)
“When Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and
behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God
descending like a dove and coming to rest on him, and behold, a voice from
heaven said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased’.”
(Matthew 3:16-17)
“ . . . a voice from the clouds said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am
well pleased; listen to him’.” (Matthew 17:5)
The Servant is the humble, just and victorious Messiah
“He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice. . . He will not grow faint or be
discouraged till he has established justice in the earth” (v2-4)
“(he) ordered them not to make him known. This was to fulfill what was
spoken through the prophet Isaiah: ‘Behold my servant whom I have chosen,
my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him,
and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles . . .” (Matthew 12:16-21)
The Servant is the covenant-keeping, light-giving Messiah
“I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, to open
the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon.” (v6-7)
“Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured
out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” (Matthew 26:27-28)
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness,
but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
“Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise from the end of the earth”
