The Holy Spirit is Another Jesus

Scripture: John 14:16-17

I. The Holy Spirit is another Jesus who is with you.

A. Jesus talks about the good gift God will give to the disciples in vs. 16: “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.” The Holy Spirit is called by Jesus another Helper. If the Holy Spirit is another Helper, then Jesus must be the first Helper. Now that Jesus is leaving the disciples, He will ask God to send them another helper who will give them the same kind of help that Jesus gave them.

B. Both Jesus and the Holy Spirit carry on the same type of helping work for us as followers of Jesus. But while both Jesus and the Holy Spirit are with the disciples, only the Holy Spirit lives in the disciples (vs. 17). The Spirit is another Jesus, the Jesus who went through suffering and death for you on the cross. And when you go through pain and sorrow, the Holy Spirit goes through it with you and in you.

II. The Holy Spirit is another Jesus who helps you.

A. The Holy Spirit is called another Helper in vs. 16. The Greek word paraclete which is translated Helper in the English Standard Version is translated Counselor in the New International Version. It is in this legal sense of the word counselor that Jesus, the first Helper is spoken about 1 John 2:1: “But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” Jesus is our legal advocate when we sin.

B. The Holy Spirit helps us in many ways. He helps with our guilty conscience. Hebrews 9:14: “How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.” Jesus’ blood shed on the cross paid all our debt to God and secured our complete forgiveness. The Holy Spirit helps us by applying the sacrifice of Jesus to our guilty consciences.

III. The Holy Spirit is another Jesus who guides you into the truth.

A. Jesus emphasizes in John 14:17 that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth. Where primarily do we find the truth that the Holy Spirit is speaking to us about Jesus? The Spirit of truth speaks to us through the Bible. 2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” Are you fighting against Satan’s lies by getting the truth of the Bible into your mind every day?
