Because of Who He is

                                                He is God in His essence

“. . . He was in the form of God . . .” (v6)

“In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God. . .” (John 1:1a)

                                                He is God in His authority

“. . . did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped.” (v6)

“. . . and the Word was God. . . ” (John 1:1b)

Because of What He did

                                                He became empty

“. . . but emptied himself” (v7)

“Father glorify me in your own presence with the glory I had with you before the world existed.” (John 17:5)

                                                He became a man

“. . . being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form” (v7-8)

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. . .” (John 1:14)

                                                He became a servant

“. . . taking the form of a servant” (v7)

“even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:28)

                                                He became death

“he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (v8)

“But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.” (Hebrews 2:9)
