Ephesians 1:11-14
The greatness of an inheritance is directly proportional to the wealth of the one giving it.
“. . . according to the riches of his grace. . . “ (v7)
The greatness of an inheritance is directly linked to the generosity of the one giving it.
“. . . which he lavished upon us . . .” (v8)
The greatness of an inheritance is contingent on the death of the one giving it.
“ . . . we have redemption through his blood . . .” (v7)
What is our inheritance?
True disciples of Christ will inherit all that is rightfully Christ’s.
“The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs – heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ” (Romans 8:16-17)
Our Inheritance was Obtained in Christ
“In him we have obtained an inheritance . . .” (v11)
“In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him . . .” (v13)
Our Inheritance was Predestined by the Father
“. . . having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will” (v 11)
“. . . even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will . . .” (v4-5)
Our Inheritance is Sealed by the Holy Spirit
“. . . were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.” (v13-14)
“I will ask my Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth . . .the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” (John 14:16-17,26)
“And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.” (2 Corinthians 1:21-22)
