I Am the Door of the Sheep

I Am the Door of the Sheep
February 25, 2018

Scripture: John 10:6-9

I. If you go through the door of Jesus, you will be saved.

A.In the first few verses of John 10, Jesus has been talking about how he is the shepherd of His sheep. Jesus changes His metaphor in vs. 7. He no longer says “I am the shepherd of the sheep.” He now says in vs. 7, “I am the door of the sheep.” This statement that I am the door of the sheep is the third of the seven I am statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John. Jesus is saying that you can only enter salvation through faith in Him. Jesus and Jesus alone is the door that you need to go through in order to become one of God’s sheep, a part of God’s family and God’s church.

B. John 3:36: “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.” God is holy and loves righteousness. So, if God loves righteousness what does He hate? Sin. Sin is all that is opposed to God’s holiness. The good news is that God has given us a solution to our sin problem. That solution is Jesus. He died on the cross to take the penalty that we owed for our sin. If we put our faith in Jesus, if we go through the door of Jesus, we are saved. We have the gift of eternal life.

II. If you go through the door of Jesus, you will be safe from harm.

A. The second promise of vs. 9 is that if you go through the door of Jesus, you will go in and out. The four words “I am… he will” are the Gospel, the good news Jesus has for us. Jesus is I AM. The words I AM are God’s name. If you put your faith in Jesus as your God, He will do certain things for you. So, Jesus makes his I AM statement at the beginning of vs. 9, and then He goes on to say what is the result for those who trust in Jesus. The person who trusts in Jesus, he will (vs. 9) have certain promises fulfilled for him as a result of his faith in the greatness of Jesus.

B. What does this promise that we will go in and out mean? It means that you will constantly live under the protection of your good shepherd Jesus. No matter where you go or what you do in this world, your shepherd Jesus will always be with you. He will be there for you in every situation to guide and protect you. John 10:27-28: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.”

III. If you go through the door of Jesus, you will be satisfied.

A. If you go through the door of Jesus, not only will your soul be saved. Not only will you be safe as you make your journey toward heaven while you live in this world. But finally you will be satisfied. This is the last of Jesus’ promises in vs. 9: as one of Jesus’ sheep you will find pasture. And this pasture is not just any old pasture. It is a luxurious pasture. You will be satisfied when you enjoy what Jesus has to give you in His pasture. Jesus will give you the very best. We see that in John 10:10 where Jesus says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” There are a lot of people and advertisers who promise you that they can satisfy you. They can give you what you really want and need. But only Jesus can open the door to true satisfaction in your life. It is Jesus who is the joy giver. It is Jesus who satisfies. He alone can give you what your heart is hungry for.

Application:
Go through the door of Jesus to receive His promises. Pray for others to go through the door.
