Jesus is a Great Speaker

Jesus is a Great Speaker

December 24, 2017

Scripture: Hebrews 1:1-4

I. Jesus is a great speaker who speaks as God’s Son.

A. God has always spoken. We read in vs. 1 that God spoke in the Old Testament times by the prophets. God spoke through prophets so that people could know Him and love Him and live in joyful obedience to Him. But then Jesus entered the world at Christmas. And so we read those wonderful words of Hebrews 1:2: “but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son.” In the past God spoke through prophets. But now finally God has spoken to us by his Son. God has closed the communication gap between Himself and us through His Son.

B. Jesus has a word of comfort for the suffering this Christmas. Jesus is the radiance of the glory of God (Heb. 1:3). If you love Jesus and are faithful to Him in times of suffering, Jesus is not just going to share His glory with the glory of the Father. He will also share His glory with you. Romans 8:16-17: The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.”

II. Jesus is a great speaker who speaks promises He will make good on.

A. When you read the Gospels, you will frequently read Jesus making some great promises. But how do we know that Jesus will make good on every promise that He has made? In Hebrews 1:2 we read that God has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things. How much does Jesus stand to inherit from His Father God? All things. Since Jesus will be King over everything and since Jesus will own everything, that means that He can and will make good on every promise He has made.

B. Let’s think about a few of the great promises Jesus has made. In Matthew 5:5 Jesus promised “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” Jesus will share some of his rich inheritance of the entire earth with those who love Him and live by faith. Another great promise is found in Romans 8:39: nothing “in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Then in Revelation 21:4 we are promised: “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

III. Jesus is a great speaker who speaks forgiveness over us.

A. “When did Jesus purify us of our sins (Heb. 1:3) ? When did He make us clean? When did He forgive us?” The answer that the Bible provides us is at the cross. Later on in the book of Hebrews in chapter 9 verse 22 we read: “Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.” Jesus then had to shed his blood on our behalf in order to bring us forgiveness. As both God and man Jesus is qualified to reconcile us to the holy God. As God, He is perfect. As man, Jesus could represent us to God and be our substitute for sin. Because Jesus purifies us of sin when we trust that He died for us He is able to say to us, “Your sins are forgiven you.”
