Jesus is Greater Than Our Rebellion
We were Slaves
“Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses?” (v16)
“Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment, I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. I will bring you in to the land that I swore to give Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to you for a possession.” (Exodus 6:6-8)
What caused our slavery? – Our Rebellion
“We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin” (Romans 6:6-7)
We are Prone to Wandering
“With whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? (v17)
“Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” (Exodus 17:3)
What causes our wandering? – Our Rebellion
We are Promised Rest from Slavery and Wandering
“And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? (v18)
“My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” (Exodus 33:14)
“But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.” (Romans 6:22)
What gives us rest? – Submitting to Jesus
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
How can we find rest?
- We examine our hearts (v12)
- We help each other (v13)
- We share in Christ (v14)
