John: Like Jesus We Will Suffer

Scripture: Mark 13:1-13

The Promise of Prosperity
Does Not Lead Us Astray

“See that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray.” (v5-6)

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.  For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth.” (2 Timothy 4:1-4)

“But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.  And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed.” (2 Peter 2:1-2)

The Promise of Persecution
Does Not Cause Us Alarm

“And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. . . But be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them.” (v7-9)

“In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

“A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.” (John 15:20)
