Scripture: Matthew 9:1-13
We Experience Mercy
Through the Forgiveness of Jesus
“Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, ‘Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.’” (v2)
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
We Respond to Mercy
Through our Personal Repentance
“As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth, and he said to him, ‘Follow me’. And he rose and followed him. (v9)
“If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:6-7)
We Display Mercy
Through our Gospel Witness
“And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples.” (v10)
“Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means: I desire mercy, and not sacrifice. For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” (v12-13)
