Philip: Like Jesus We Do Good works

Scripture: John 14:7-12

True Belief
is Not Blind Faith

“Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.” (v10-11)

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. . .By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.” (Hebrews 11:1, 3)

“Jesus answered them, ‘I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me. . . I and the Father are one’.” (John 10:25, 30)

True Belief
is Not Alone

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.” (v12)

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:8-10)

“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? . . . So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” (James 2:14-17)
