Run
August 20, 2017

1 Corinthians 9:19-27

“Run that you may
obtain (the prize).” (v24)

Who Are You Striving to Win?

All nations

“For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them.” (v19)

“I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.” (v22)

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

What Are You Striving to Win?

The imperishable prize

“I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.” (v23)

“They (run) to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.” (v25)

“. . . forgetting what lies behind and staining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14)

How Are You striving to Win?

With discipline

“So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.” (v26-27)

“Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves.” (2 Corinthians 13:5)

With intentionality

“To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. . .” (v20)

“Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.” (Acts 17:22-23)

“Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1)
