Light in the Darkness

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 4-7

Love Does Not Rejoice in the Darkness

The world was dark

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.” (Genesis 1:1-4)

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:1-5)

The world rejoiced in the darkness

“the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.” (John 3:19)

Love Rejoices with the Light

The light of Jesus points out our sin

“For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.” (John 3:20)

The light of Jesus points out the consequences of our sin

“For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already.” (John 3:17-18)

The light of Jesus points out a clear path of salvation

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
