Submit… To Him?

July 14, 2019

Ephesians 5:22-24

  1. We don’t skip passages of the Bible because they
    make us uncomfortable.
  2. We need to read the passages in the context in which
    they were written.
  3. We understand that submission is a sign of godliness.

Wife, submit to Christ because He is Lord.

“Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.” (v22)

What does Lord mean?
He is master and authority.
What does it mean to submit to the Lord?
We recognize God’s preeminence.

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand
of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you.” (1Peter 5:6)

Wife, submit to Christ because He is Head of
the church.

“For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the
head of the church, his body.” (v23)

What does Head mean?
He is leader or overseer.
What does it mean to submit to the head?
We recognize God’s position.

“(God) put all things under (Christ’s) feet and gave him as head
over all things to the church, which is his body.” (Ephesians 1:22-23)

Wife, submit to Christ because He is Savior.

“Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself
its Savior”. (v23)

What does Lord mean?
He is deliverer and preserver.
What does it mean to submit to the Savior?
We recognize God’s provision.

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who
live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in
the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me
and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)

Wife, submit to your husband because He is
head of the household.

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ
is the head of the church . . . Now as the church submits to
Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to
their husbands.” (v22-24)

What does head mean?
He is a loving leader.
What does it mean to submit to the head?
We recognize God’s plan.

Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the
Lord.” (Colossians 3:18)
