A Heart for God

The Chosen King

Scripture: 1 Samuel 9:1 – 10:16

I. Israel’s Chosen King

a. Who is Saul? – Although Saul comes from some humble beginnings, we can see some things about Saul in this passage that would give the appearance that he could in fact be a great king.

b. Saul was tall and handsome – “There was not a man among the people of Israel more handsome than he. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people.” 1 Samuel 9:2b

c. Saul had a humble heart  – “Am I not a Benjaminite, from the least of the tribes of Israel?” 1 Samuel 9:21

d. Saul had a new heart given to him by God – “God gave him another heart.”         1 Samuel 10:9

e. Saul was given the power of the Holy Spirit – “And the Spirit of God rushed upon him and he began to prophesy.” 1 Samuel 10:10b

II. God’s Chosen King

a. Jesus as King – He has been seated at the right hand of God, that it is “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come…” Ephesians 1:20-22

b. Jesus as Prophet – “Moses said, The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you…” Acts 3:22-24

c. Jesus as Priest – “And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” Hebrews 10:10

III. Our Chosen King in Our Lives

a. Who is Your King? – Put God first in your life. Replace the kings, and idols that you have in your life with the one True God and King.
