Watching, Waiting, and Living in Uncertain Times

SERMON OUTLINE

Habakkuk 2:1-4

Watching for an Answer from the Lord

  • “I will take my stand at my watchpost and station myself on the tower, and look out to see what he will say to me, and what I will answer concerning my complaint.” (v1)
  • “But as for me, I will look to the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me.” (Micah 7:7)

Watching for the Lord’s answer doesn’t mean we know what the answer is, but rather, we know that the Lord knows what the answer is.

Waiting on the Promises of the Lord

They are from God

  • “And the Lord answered me. . .” (v2)
  • “no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Peter 1:20-21)

They are clear

  • “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets . . .” (v2)
  • “You shall write on the stones all the words of this law very plainly.” (Deuteronomy 27:8)

They are important

  • “. . . so he may run who reads it.” (v2)

They are certain

  • “For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end . . . If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.” (v3)
  •  “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promises as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)

Waiting on the Lord’s promises doesn’t mean we know when they will come true, but only that they will come true.

Living with Faith in the Lord

  • “Behold, his soul is puffed up, it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith.” (v4)
  •  “But you, O Lord, are enthroned forever; you are remembered throughout all generations. You will arise and have mercy.”    (Psalm 102:12-13a)

Living by the Lord’s faith doesn’t mean that there will be no pain, or trials or uncertainty in our lives, but only that how we live our lives and who we live our lives for never changes.
